Orion Engineering is looking to fill a position for an Electrical/Instrument Engineer assigned to a client location in the Baton Rouge area. This position should have a minimum of 3 years of industry-related experience. Electrical and Instrumentation field experience, construction experience or project experience is preferred. BSEE is required. This position will assist in developing +/- 30% and +/-10% scopes for Process Safety related projects including PHA action items and LOPA Gap closures. This includes creating drawing packages with redlines to hand over to the estimating group. This position will work with the Process Safety engineer, the Process engineer, the on-site Instrument Engineer, and project teams to progress these scopes to detail design. This position will learn and apply the client standards to meet requirements for field installations and bring forward any discrepancies to the project team to make decisions.

Orion Engineering is looking to fill a position for a full-time Structural Engineer assigned to the Theodore, AL office. This position would be generally responsible for performing civil/structural engineering project assignments including analyses, new building, and structure design, retrofit design, preliminary designs for estimating, and managing scopes. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of current applicable codes and standards including the International Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, etc. and be able to apply them as well as good engineering practices. The candidate would also be responsible for producing detailed calculations, checking calculations, technical reports, and design sketches to assist drafters. This position would include consulting with design leaders, recognizing and proposing alternate design solutions, gathering information from the field, and providing technical guidance to junior Team members. Having a working knowledge of computer software including RISA products or other structural analysis software, AutoCAD or other drafting software, and Microsoft Products is preferred. The candidate should be capable of working well with other Team members, leading teams to deliver on commitments, and have good verbal and written communication skills. This position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience as a civil/structural engineer and registration as a professional engineer is a plus. Work assignments are typically independent with a small level of supervision.

Primary Job Responsibilities:  

  • Management/Oversight and Execution of all Instrumentation deliverables on assigned project(s).
  • Support P&ID development; maintains the P&ID’s through each project phase; recognizes/ understands required process control strategies and ensures same are reflected accordingly.
  • Responsible for instumentation execution – manages the manhour budget, manages the staffing plan and ensures that schedule tasks remain on-track and that milestones are met.
  • Thorough understanding of the different types of instrumentation, control systems and/or electrical equipment; associated applications, dimensional data usage, etc. 
  • Thorough understanding of how Process, Mechanical and other discipline data is obtained and used to specify E&I instrumentation/equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of how instrument specifications are developed– content, assembly, checking, issued to project, etc; Preparation and Checking.
  • Support development of TIC cost estimates and Engineering/Design manhour estimates.
  • Ensure proper development of instrument engineering / design deliverables. 
  • Ensure that received process data required to instruments is complete. 
  • Ensure proper preparation/checking of engineering calculations, specifications and requisition packages – verifying content, proper assembly, thorough checking and issue to project. 
  • Ensure proper selection of items to be specified or purchased – ensure compliance with client requirements and standards, check specifications and requisition packages.
  • Ensure incorporation of instrumentation content into mechanical equipment vendor packages.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Prepare technical bid evaluations and make recommendations for purchase. 
  • Review vendor data to assure specifications and project requirements are met.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering (Other disciplines may be considered); PE license highly preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience on capital projects in oil & gas/refinery/petrochemical.
  • Solid business acumen – thorough knowledge of EPC work processes, cost control, scheduling and administrative practices, understanding project phases and associated required scope/deliverables.  
  • Significant experience in various phases of vendor selection and technical negotiation.
  • Significant experience in E&I installation requirements; impact on construction. 
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  •  Able to perform job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in an operating facility in a hot climate; may require travel to national and international jobsites and supplier locations.

ORION Engineering & Constructors, a multi-discipline engineering and construction management firm, is currently seeking an Process Engineer to become a valuable part of our successful Mechanical/Process Engineering team in our Theodore, Alabama office.

Essential Functions:

  • Familiar with AFT Software (Fathom and Arrow) or comparable vapor/liquid hydraulic software is a plus
  • Familiar with development and updating of P&IDs, and
  • Familiar with sizing process equipment
  • Defining instrumentation requirements, supporting equipment specifications, pump hydraulics and line sizing
  • Familiar with sizing conservation vents and relief devices is preferred
  • Supporting other disciplines and project management on projects, including the ability to perform on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Math skills and an excellent eye for details are a necessity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with engineering colleagues, project managers, and clients on a daily basis through email, telephone, and face-to-face meetings

Skills & Qualifications:

  • S. degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university
  • 5 -10 years relevant work experience

Operates primarily in industrial environments. Performs land (topographic, planimetric, boundary, flood certificate, etc.) surveying, construction layout/stakeout, and recording of geophysical survey results with GPS and total stations. Processes survey data. Operates as part of a 2- and 3-person survey crew both locally and out of town. Receives scopes and coordinates work activities with party chief.

  • Familiarity with GSSI equipment
  • 5 years experience in industrial environments.
